Pinot Grigio (known as Ruländer or Grauburgunder in German) has been at home in Alto Adige since the nineteenth century. The first “Pinot Gris” was introduced from Burgundy by Archduke Johann of Austria in 1852. In lower areas around Kurtatsch, the Pinot Grigio develops a mild acidity, while the high alcohol and extract content contribute to strength and flavor. The Pinot Grigio gets fine mineral-rich spice that sometimes takes on a fiery varietal perfume of gooseberries, linden flowers, and acacia blossoms from the lime-rich soils of the fantastically steep slopes of Kurtatsch-Penon. The blending of mountain and valley grapes creates an extraordinary Pinot Grigio, with the total class and creamy suppleness of the south and the seriousness on the palate of the north.

On December 19, we launched our Merlotta wines from Emilia-Romagna at Via Emilia in New York City. These wines are part of an initiative sponsored by Bologna Chamber of Commerce & organized by the Italy-America Chamber of Commerce. They are a unique edition to our portfolio for anyone interested in adventurous tasting. Wines include:
Merlotta Pignoletto Frizzante Colli d’Imola 2010 DOC; a sparkling white wine made with an indigenous grape from the area, which is a fantastic alternative to Prosecco.
Merlotta Sangiovese di Romagna Superiore Petali di Viola 2009 DOC; one of the best examples of Sangiovese from the region.
